DEPRESSION AND EXPANSION
The so-called Great Recession beginning in 2008 caused economic problems for companies and individuals nationwide over the following several years. Cranston Engineering Group, P.C. was not spared a share of the pain. Construction and development activity was in steep decline, money was scarce, and the need for design of new endeavors plummeted, both in the public sector and even more so on the private side. One bright spot grew from the firm's expertise in levees and dams that allowed the company to provide adequacy studies for levee owners who were faced with FEMA decertification of their flood protection systems in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Although the company was forced to have staff reductions in the years 2009 and 2012, the firm emerged financially sound from the recession years, better prepared to enter a period of new growth.
The year 2012 offered an opportunity for a geographic expansion of the firm with the establishment of an office in Hilton Head, South Carolina within the town of Bluffton. Although the coastal region's economy was founded on retirees and gated communities, and growth in that sector had slowed to a trickle at the time, the nature of coastal construction still offered an opportunity for the firm to fill an engineering need. In the face of economic uncertainty, Jim Cranford spearheaded the purchase of an established structural engineering practice from a former Cranston employee near Hilton Head Island. The company enjoyed a surge of new business over the ensuing three years and rode that wave to plant a new office in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015. These new locations began to serve the structural and civil engineering needs of the coastal area where special construction is needed to resist the extra forces of wind and floods. This coastal presence extended the Cranston Engineering Group professional service footprint literally from the mountains to sea.
The experiences of this fifty-year history of providing successful engineering, planning, and surveying services are distilled into the philosophies, beliefs, and daily practices of the professionals who make up Cranston Engineering Group, P.C. They continue in this tradition daily, striving to create design solutions that meet each client's expectations and enhance the communities in which they are located.
